Call For Contributors: New and Old Normals

The Activist History Review invites proposals for our September 2020 issue, “New and Old Normals”.

The Activist History Review invites proposals for our September 2020 issue, “New and Old Normals”.

The COVID-19 pandemic of 2019-20 has radically reshaped socio-cultural and institutional landscapes around the globe. As communities begin to re-open, we are presented with an unprecedented opportunity to reimagine those communities, and the broader structures that support them – how can academic institutions,p or the police force, for example, be radically changed in this moment. Utopian visions for horizontalist communities must not only become normal, but necessary in the scope of how we reimagine our shared future. This reimagining might involve the creation of new models and practices for how we live and work together, or the centering of models that have been culturally minimized or fallen into disuse.

Potential topics include but are not limited to:

  • Trauma-informed pedagogical practices
  • Community healing and restorative modalities
  • Anti-racist curricula
  • Strategies for virtualization
  • The impact of mutual aid and how it could continue

This issue aims to bring together an interdisciplinary mix of practical and theoretical approaches to the theme of “New and Old Normals” and we invite multimedia contributions as well as text-based responses.

Proposals should be no more than 250 words for articles from 1250-2000 words, and should be emailed to horne.activisthistory@gmail.com by July 31 at 11:59 PM (first drafts will be expected by August 15). Please also include a short bio of no more than 100 words with your submission.

** We will be offering a small stipend to contributors who are queer and/or trans Black Brown Indigenous People of Color (QTBBIPOC). Please indicate if you identify as such in your email. **
