In the summer of 2017, Cory Young, our copy editor here at The Activist History Review, embarked on his first dissertation research trip to Mississippi. It was pouring on the Saturday afternoon that he arrived in Natchez, and so Cory popped into the local brewing company for a pint. He felt a bit out of place, which he apparently failed to hide, since a fellow patron asked him where he was coming from and invited him to pass the time with a group of locals. Seven hours later, Cory found himself at a bar down the street, saxophone in hand, sitting in with a band covering classic rock and country standards. The town of Natchez welcomed Cory as a guest in their community—a memory he continues to cherish.
TAHR seeks essays on whatever topic or issue you have been meaning to write about, including stories like Cory’s that remind you why you continue to choose to work in academia. Our work can often be difficult and disheartening, but there are also moments of triumph, regeneration, and joy. At its core, activism strives to connect and to better the world. This holiday season, let’s celebrate these victories together, no matter their size. Potential topics include but are not limited to:
- That one breathtaking source you really want to talk about
- Research trip stories that remind you why you adore this community
- Conference experiences that made you feel welcomed
- Transformative moments in the archive
- Student interactions that keep you going
- Teachable moments
- Words of encouragement or advice to scholars and activists
- That one class you have been thinking about developing
Please submit a short (one page or less) proposal and 100-word bio to Cory Young at activisthistory@gmail.com by Sunday, November 25th at 11:59PM. Final articles will be 1250-2000 words.
