Just as the history of the Maroons in Jamaica demonstrate, the black freedom struggle can ill afford any more accommodation or compromise now any more than it did two centuries ago. Marronage is freedom, but only if we collectively understand its limits. Otherwise it is mired in class collaborationist politics which may profess a desire for black freedom, but in reality hamper it at every turn.
The broader citizenship did not passively wait for elite men to decide how their government should work. Instead, they mobilized and created political structures based on a rich history of broad-based political participation.
Usually it is the Left that is stereotyped as tyrannical with its political correctness and assertions of rights, according to the standard Republican line. But really, it’s Trump coming for people’s land, stampeding over rights, and ignoring public opinion.
Activists have applied political pressure most effectively on the state and local levels. The fugitive slave crisis of the 1850s provides a historical roadmap for embracing formal politics as a means toward activist ends in the United States.

On the international scene, Nigeria is now regarded as a country in which integrity and transparency are alien and where no transactions occur without “scratching the back” of the personnel in charge. From the federal to the local level of government, there has been phenomenal increase in the incident of corruption and bad governance which has consistently threatened political stability in the country.
